Laser Hair Removal Procedures on The Rise

The number of laser clinics appearing on the high street over the past 3 years has been notable.  Most local towns and cities now have provided laser hair removal facilities on their door step.  One recent addition is ClinicSP, providing laser hair removal Hertford and free consultations for local herfordshire customers.

What is the procedure and how does it work?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure that stops hair regrowth. It is a more convenient solution to shaving, waxing or plucking hairs and is suitable for all skin types. The procedure is also gentle enough to be able to be used all over the body, especially more sensitive areas like the face and neck.

The procedure is called IPL or Intense Pulse Light which destroys the hair at the follicle, preventing it from growing back. The light targets the melanin in the hair, which is responsible for making it grow, and the follicle which is where the hair grows from, causing damage to the tissue but not affecting the skin. This ensures that the hair does not grow back.

How is it administered?

An applicator is held over the surface of the skin and the light pulses through. It is a non-invasive procedure compared with electrolysis. A few patients experience mild discomfort but the procedure is painless. The skin may be slightly red in the period following the treatment but there are no major side effects to IPL.

How many treatments will I need?

Everybody responds differently to IPL and a skin and hair analysis will be performed to determine the best course of treatment before anything is done.

Studies have shown that dark coarse hair responds ideally to laser treatments for hair removal, requiring fewer treatments but lighter and finer shades of hair can also be successfully targeted. Generally speaking men require more treatments than ladies as they usually have more hair.

On average most clients require between 5 and 8 sessions. Depending on the rate of hair regrowth follow up sessions can be arranged monthly or every 6, 8 or 12 weeks.

The hairs that have been treated need to fall out on their own to analyze how successful the procedure was and that can take between two and three weeks to finish.

How is IPL different to electrolysis?

IPL hair removal treatment has proven to be much less painful and quicker to perform than electrolysis making it a preferred alternative.
